Background

The Rick Weiss Humanitarian Award was founded by Earl Greenburg as a tribute to his life partner, Rick Weiss, who died of AIDS in 1994.  Rick was a wonderfully loving human being who loved animals and the elderly and always did his part to make the world a better place in which to live.

The dream of opening a residence at the beach started back in 1993. In 1995, Earl learned of an organization called Project New Hope that was advocating for a site south of the Santa Monica Pier to provide affordable housing to assist people living with HIV/AIDS. Earl stepped forward in 1995 with a pledge to help raise funds to name the facility in memory of Rick. A dedication ceremony was held in 1999 to commemorate the dream becoming a reality. The ceremony was followed by a black tie gala and thus the Rick Weiss Humanitarian Awards Gala was started.

Two years later, the fundraiser moved to Palm Springs and under the non-profit Greenburg Family Foundation, the Rick Weiss Humanitarian Awards now raises a little over $1 million each year for ongoing support of the apartments in Santa Monica and as of 2007 in Palm Springs through the partnership of Desert AIDS Project In addition, donations are dispersed to an incredible list of other mission related non profits such as Desert AIDS Project, Gay Associated Youth, Barbara Sinatra Children's Center, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Shelter from the Storm Battered Women's Center, Project Angel Food and many, many more.

Past honorees include Suzanne Somers, Leeza Gibbons, Larry King, Judith Light, Mary Hart, Magic Johnson, Sherry Lansing, Priscilla Presley, Stuart Siegel, MD, Eric & Janet McCormack, Sidney Poitier, Jon Shestack, Portia Iversen and Berry Gordy, Sharon and Kelly Stone, SAG Foundation and William Shatner.
